#98 Animaniacs Segments Were All Worthy.

Yakko, Wakko and Dot carried the load for the joke heavy Animaniacs. Whether they were being chased through the Warner Brothers lot, going gaga over the well-proportioned “Hello Nurse” or participating in some other type of shenanigans, they were consistently hilarious. Of course, we probably only understood about 50% of the jokes because it was plastered with adult material and innuendo that our little virgin ears and innocent minds had no way of comprehending. Much like Rocko’s Modern Life and Ren & Stimpy, Animaniacs may be funnier to folks now than it was back in the day for a whole new set of reasons. What really made Animaniacs so dope was that it had something for all of us. If you weren’t a fan of Wakko, Yakko and Dot there were a variety of other segments that varied in length and gave it something of a sketch comedy cartoon feel. Other toons included:
Pinky and The Brain: One genius mouse named “Brain” who wanted to take over the world and another mouse named “Pinky” who was a complete moron, negating The Brain’s brilliance. So freaking funny it got its own successful spinoff series, boo-ya.
Slappy Squirrel: Basically a female squirrel who liked to smack the hell outta people with her purse and use explosives. Slappy had a nephew named Skippy who was consistently upbeat and chipper. For some reason Skippy idolized his famous aunt Slappy, despite the fact that she was kind of a jerk.
The Goodfeathers: This is the most epic trio of pigeons EVER, bar none! Bobby, Squit and Pesto were an obvious spoof of the characters played by Joe Pesci, Robert De Niro and Ray Liotta in the movie Goodfellas. They argued, fussed and fought – many times Pesto beat the mess out of Squit which gave us the physical comedy that we all wanted.  If you don’t recall it, do go on Youtube and find some clips because you’ll really enjoy it… Will you think it’s funny? What do you mean funny, like a clown? Will it amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how?
Rita and Runt: A stupid dog (Runt) and a singing cat (Rita) who traveled the globe in search of a place to call home. Hijinks ensued.
Minerva Mink: Basically Minerva Mink was about a mink. She was shallow, vain and gave off a really scandalous vibe. She could charm and seduce any man and every time she saw an attractive one, she did exactly that. She had the least amount of segments, probably because promiscuous female animals aren’t the best characters for little girls to mold themselves after.
Buttons and Mindy: I’d like to start by saying,  “F U, Mindy”. This little girl was always breaking out of her harness and getting into some kind of dangerous situation. Then Buttons, being a good hearted dog, would go through hell to save Mindy’s stupid, unsupervised self. And what would Buttons get in return? A dog treat? No. A new toy? No. Not even a “thank you”. Instead, he had Mindy’s ungrateful mom bashing and punishing him. Just awful. So, here’s to Buttons and his dedication to that undeserving family.

  1. Woah woah woah, what about Chicken Boo‽

  2. I miss Anamaniacs. The cartoons kids have today are utter crap.

  3. What about Freakazoid?

  4. I know what you mean. I am a cartoon lover myself, but I usually watch classic reruns of the likes of Ghostbusters, He-Man, Thundercats, and Bravestar on the local “Retro” network then the Saturday Morning crap they have out now.

I would rather have Sonique Underground the Sonic X anyday.

  5. My favorites were always the Good Idea Bad Ideas.

  6. Wheel of Morality turn, turn, turn, tell us the lesson that we should learn!

  7. meghan august

    Poor buttons, he was awesome!

  8. The one segment that was ALWAYS a dud was the hippos.

  9. It’s time for another “Good Idea, Bad Idea.”

Good idea: Visiting picturesque McLean, Virginia.
Bad idea: Visiting picturesque McLean Stevenson.

As a kid, I could never appreciate that like I do NOW. Best show ever.

  10. Good Idea Bad Idea FTW.

  11. Buttons finally got his treat : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PEEaHEEeK0

    skip to 2:40

  12. I have one exception to this realization: Katie Kaboom. I absolutely HATE her. She wasn’t funny, she was unlikable, and I could have done without her.

  13. Seriously how could you leave out Good Idea Bad Idea! Def my favorite of all the sketch’s followed closely by pinky and the brain and the buttons and mindy. God I miss this show. Maybe I’ll be dot for halloween?

  14. This just made me realize that Freakazoid is the greatest untapped movie possibility EVER!

  15. What about Colin the “Ok, see, this one time, my friend, Randy Beaman…” kid?! He was hysterical!

  16. I wasn’t allowed to watch “Animaniacs” – unfortunately, my mom got the jokes…

  17. Slappy Squirrel deserved her own half hour show.

    • I concur! Her segments were my most favourite out of all of them 😀 (except for of course Animaniacs itself)
Side note… it’s weird watching all these now and seeing all the adult jokes in it that you never noticed as a kid o.O although I suppose kids these days would probably notice them…
